Paintings
I focused my efforts and energies as an artist on painting for the past five years. The work below covers that period, from June 1999, when I first started painting during a four week summer-school course in Florence, Italy, through July 2004, when I moved out of my apartment in Washington, DC to head off to graduate school. I really loved painting, and I invested a lot of myself trying to make it work out between us. The pictures here represent the largest part of my investment in art so far.
I have an inclusive definition of painting at the moment, so the 'paintings' here include drawings and other related things that I have done. I have a special fondness for painting for two reasons: (1) It is an extension of drawing, which is something I have done going back to my littlest self and which is a real part of myself, and (2) because when I started painting in college, it was the first time that I invested any serious aspirations in my work.
I've divided the works roughly chronologically, and they tend to naturally group around a few periods of more concentrated production:
Vermont Studio Center. January, 2004. Work done during a four week
residency at the Vermont Studio Center, digging into interests in masculinity
and violence.
Washington, DC. June 2002 - July 2004. Work done while I lived in
Washington, mostly on my own, but notably influenced by Bill Willis and classmates
during a painting class at the Corcoran College of Art and Design.
Burlington and Virginia. October 2001 - June 2002. Work done mostly
while I lived in Burlington, Vermont, and a bit while I was looking for a job
in Washington.
Chautauqua. June 2001 - September 2001. Work done during an 8 week
stay at the Chautauqua Institute. This was a great experience.
Senior Year. September 2000 - Spring 2001. Work done senior year
at Yale.
Junior Year. June 1999 - Spring 2000. Work done at a summer program
in Italy.
